Ever so close and yet so far: Health insurance protections seem once again at risk of disappearing in the hands of our Republican-led federal government. The newly introduced, hastily assembled MacArthur Amendment to the American Health Care Act may be making its way toward a vote that will take it from House to Senate.
This attempt worsens the legislation that Paul Ryan promoted and citizens helped kill. While preserving draconian cuts and loss of insurance for some 24 million people, it adds ways to eliminate basic benefits for women and coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, which will harm American families, especially children.
Where does this march to madness originate? Not from the thoughtful analysis we expect from legislators, but from the work of right-wing ideologues.
Tell our legislators in Washington to fix our health insurance system once and for all. And while we’re at it, let’s make “for all” mean “everybody in” by asking them to pass HR 676, The Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, legislation that would establish a nonprofit single-payer system, finally giving us a way to put solid health care policy into effect and high-quality health care within our reach.
