Coalition for Health Care of N. Carolina mtg, discussing “Carolina Cares”
March 27, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The Coalition for Health Care of North Carolina continues to move towards our goal of quality health care for all in our city, state and nation. We’re excited about our March public program and hope you will join us and share this information with others who might be interested.
We are all concerned about the health insurance gap that’s grown considerably since NC refused to participate in Medicaid expansion under the ACA, especially as it relates to addressing the burgeoning opioid epidemic. You probably are aware that a bill with the intention of addressing this health insurance gap has been drafted by Rep. Danny Lambeth and co-sponsored by a number of his fellow Republicans: Carolina Cares, HB 662. Many of us have questions about the pros and cons of this bill, which may be discussed and voted on during the NC General Assembly’s May legislative session.
We hope that you will join us to learn more about the proposed Carolina Cares bill on Tuesday, March 27, 6-8pm, Southwest Regional Library, 3605 Shannon Rd, Durham, NC. We are fortunate to have Carla Obiol, director of Care for Carolina, provide us with an overview of that group’s coalition and mission, discuss the importance of closing the health insurance gap, and update us on what is happening with this bill at the NC General Assembly. Ms Obiol will answer our questions about the positive and negative aspects of the Carolina Cares bill and whether it deserves our support, despite its imperfections.
Carla Obiol became director of Care4Carolina in February 2017. A NC Department of Insurance veteran of 32 years, Carla managed the state Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) from 1992 until 2010 before serving as a Senior Deputy Commissioner of the Consumer Assistance Group. She has served on numerous boards and advisory committees related to insurance and aging and currently is a board member of Care Share Health Alliance, which works to provide access to care for the uninsured in NC.
